Victor Figueroa-Flores, age 23, was sentenced after he was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Romel Danis, age 25, on Oct. 28, the Essex County District Attorney's Office reports.
Prosecutors said that Figueroa-Flores, along with Nathaniel Pagan, randomly targeted Danis and two other men and mistook them for Trinitario gang members, the office reports.
After idly waiting for the men to walk by, Figueroa-Flores shot Danis as he was getting into his car on Lawton Street in Lynn in the early morning hours of June 23, 2018. Figueroa-Flores was 20 at the time, the office reports.
Danis’ mother, Pastora Silverio, described the moment she heard about her son's death to WHDH.
“This morning, somebody knocked on my door and said, ‘Your son, I think somebody shot him,'” she told the outlet.
Danis' girlfriend, Stefanie Hernandez, said the last time she spoke to her boyfriend was over the phone.
“I told him to be safe cause I knew he had work in the morning and to just get home safe," she told the outlet. "He didn’t deserve this.”
Pagan, who was 16 at the time, previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years, the office reports.
Figueroa-Flores was also found guilty of two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the office reports.
